I had the privilege of participating in the Law Practice Program from August 2023 to April 2024 under the leadership of Fariya Walji, and I continue to be inspired by her excellence in advocacy, leadership, and mentorship.

Fariya is an outstanding advocate and educator. Her approach to teaching advocacy was engaging, practical, and deeply empowering. She modeled strong presentation skills and helped us develop our own voices and confidence in legal argument. Her sessions were not only informative but transformative, she made every student feel seen, heard, and capable.

As a leader, Fariya set the tone for professionalism, inclusivity, and excellence. She created an environment where we were challenged and supported in equal measure. Her ability to lead with clarity, empathy, and vision left a lasting impression on all of us.

I have come to know Fariya well through her work at the LPP. Fariya is a natural connector—warm, grounded, and always intentional in the way she fosters community and learning.

I had the privilege of connecting with Fariya through the Law Practice Program, and I can confidently say that she has played a transformative role in my professional journey. Throughout the program, Fariya conducted several insightful sessions on resume writing, cover letter development, interview preparation and most importantly networking and outreach strategies. These weren’t just theoretical workshops, they were full of practical, actionable advice that made a significant impact on my ability to navigate the legal job market.

Thanks to the tips and strategies she shared, I’ve been able to secure three positions so far all directly influenced by her guidance during the networking and outreach sessions. In fact, one of the most memorable moments in my career was securing a student position with a litigator who has over 24 years of experience within just 22 hours of applying the strategies I learned from Fariya. That kind of success doesn’t happen by accident; it’s a direct result of the confidence and clarity she instilled in me.

Beyond her professional expertise, Fariya is an incredible source of inspiration. Her own personal and professional journey marked by resilience, determination, and grace has been a guiding light for many of us in the program. Her ability to connect on a personal level, share her experiences, and encourage others to persevere through their own challenges is truly exceptional.

She consistently reminded us to keep moving forward, to rise above setbacks, and to approach each new opportunity with optimism and strength. I consider her a mentor in every sense of the word and someone whose influence will stay with me throughout my career.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Fariya in law school and have watched her career soar since. Fariya is an amazing mentor who always made herself available for advice on various issues that I encountered as an articling student. These issues ranged from professional responsibility to substantive questions about civil procedure and litigation. Fariya makes for such a great mentor because she is so approachable. I never felt like I was talking to a senior who would judge my knowledge or approach to legal issues. That kind of support is incredibly important to students who are just learning the ropes with very little practical experience in the legal world. She is generous with her time and willing to share personal experiences to provide guidance on handling challenges. This was particularly helpful to me as a woman and person of colour in this profession where mentors I can relate to or learn from our limited.

I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with Fariya over the past year at the Law Practice Program. She leads with both strength and kindness, and I’ve learned so much from her.

As the Senior Program Director and team leader, Fariya is incredibly organized, reliable, and always thinking a few steps ahead.
